ASME-PVDE: Core Code Modules – Nozzles, Tube Joints, and Lifting Lugs
We have reached the final installment of our deep dive into the ASME-PVDE. After setting up global configurations, integrating materials, and sizing the primary pressure boundary, it is time to look at the penetrations and structural attachments.
Developing open-source engineering software is ultimately about architecting scalable solutions that handle the complex, tedious edge cases so designers can focus on the big picture. The final modules—Nozzle Reinforcement, Tube-to-Tubesheet Joints, and Lifting Lugs—embody this by automating some of the most intricate geometry and stress calculations in the ASME Code.
1. Nozzle Reinforcement & Penetrations
Every vessel needs openings, but every penetration weakens the pressure boundary. The Nozzle Reinforcement module handles the rigorous area replacement rules required by ASME Section VIII to ensure structural integrity.
Handling Complex Orientations
Standard perpendicular penetrations are straightforward, but ASME-PVDE is built to adapt to complex geometries:
- Radial: The standard, perpendicular penetration through shells and heads.
- Hillside: Off-axis penetrations on cylindrical shells. The software automatically handles the distinct chord length and limit of reinforcement calculations required here.
- Lateral (Angled): For angled penetrations, the reinforcement area is heavily dependent on the angle of intersection. ASME-PVDE prompts for this specific orientation angle to adjust the geometry accordingly.
Note
The tilt direction for hillside nozzles will result in different d values. For a great sample case study, refer to ASME PTB-4 2021, Example E4.5.2 (Hillside Opening in Cylindrical Shell).
Intelligent Parameter Integration
Rather than forcing you to input every variable manually, ASME-PVDE streamlines the setup:
- Thickness Values ($t_r$ and $t_{re}$): You can enter these manually (excluding the corrosion allowance) or use the parent element selector to automatically retrieve values from your other active spreadsheets.

Parent Element Adaptability: The calculation formulas dynamically update based on where the nozzle is attached—whether it is a cylinder, flat head, bolted flange, or dished head (Spherical, Torispherical, or Elliptical).
Note
Conical elements are currently in development and not yet fully implemented.
- Joint Efficiency (Es): By default, Es is set to 1. However, the logic accommodates specific edge cases where the nozzle inherits the parent element’s joint efficiency (e.g., on torispherical heads when the opening is outside the spherical zone, or on ellipsoidal heads when outside 80% of the shell diameter).
- Simplified Manways: If you flag a nozzle as a manway or inspection opening, ASME-PVDE simplifies the UG-45 minimum thickness calculation method. Since these openings don’t carry external piping loads, no further calculation is required.
Reinforcement & Weld Design Logic
- Projection Tracking: The software accurately tracks nozzle projection lengths (both internal and external) to feed directly into external pressure calculations. If you use the “Flange Data” feature, ASME-PVDE will automatically subtract the flange thickness to determine the true projection length of the pipe.
- Self-Reinforcing Nozzles: For components like Long Weld Necks (LWN) or Hub Nozzles that do not utilize reinforcement pads, simply toggle the self-reinforcing option and specify your bevel height.
- Weld Designation: The user interface features interactive graphics that update based on your selected weld type (abutting vs. set-in/insert). This isn’t just visual; the program uses your selection to determine the exact calculation area and required weld sizing.
2. Tube-to-Tubesheet Joints
For heat exchanger design, the interface between the tubes and the tubesheet is highly susceptible to failure under thermal and pressure stresses.
ASME-PVDE automates the weld strength logic for these critical joints. By taking your tube dimensions, tubesheet parameters, and weld sizes, the module verifies that the joint provides sufficient holding power to prevent tube pull-out or fatigue failure during operation.
Design Considerations Managed by PVDE:
- U-Tubes: Typically affected only by pressure, not thermal loads.
- Fixed Tubes: Evaluates both pressure and thermal effects to determine the loads the weld must resist.
- Electric Heaters: Since the “tube side” connects to terminal/junction boxes rather than handling process fluids, ASME-PVDE allows you to zero out the tube-side design parameters.
- Interactive Joint Types: As you change the joint type input, the visual diagram updates, ensuring the program applies the correct specific formula for the weld strength calculation.
3. Lifting Lugs and Structural Attachments
Moving away from pure pressure containment, the Lifting Lug module addresses the structural reality of moving and installing heavy static equipment. A unique aspect of ASME-PVDE is its flexibility in accommodating different industry-accepted design methodologies.
Choosing Your Design Methodology
There is no single “best” way to design a lifting lug; it depends on the load application and your project specifications. ASME-PVDE integrates multiple standards to cover all bases:
- ASME BTH-1 (Design of Below-the-Hook Lifting Devices): A highly flexible and comprehensive approach. It is often preferred for its simplicity and covers the vast majority of failure modes.
- Air Force Method: Utilizes empirical curves to assess allowable loads based on interaction. While generally more accurate for oblique (angled) loading, it is more complex.
- AISC & EN 13445-3: Also incorporated for specific welding practices and structural checks.
Configuring Perpendicular Lugs
When designing standard tailing lugs or top head lifting points, PVDE allows granular control over the structural parameters:
- Material Properties: Tensile strength defaults to a 38°C baseline (ambient temperature), but you can utilize the user-defined material registry for custom temperatures.
- Stiffener Logic: Stiffeners must be defined in pairs. PVDE automatically calculates the second moment of area and accounts for the stiffener-to-pin-hole spacing to determine the load eccentricity.
- Safety & Experience Factors: The module allows you to apply precise safety margins, including a general Impact Factor (typically 1.5 to 2.0 for dynamic response), ASME BTH-1 Operator Experience factors, and Load Cycle factors to guard against fatigue.
- AISC Occasional Factor: If your lifting lug is subjected to wind or other occasional loads, this factor can be used to appropriately increase the allowable stress.

Warning
SPECIFIC SOFTWARE LIMITATIONS TO BE AWARE OF:
- The conical element is not yet fully implemented in the nozzle module.
- The unstayed flat head module cannot be used to determine reinforcement openings on flat heads or blinds; use the nozzle module instead for such designs.
- The iterative sub-procedure for the nozzle module is automated and does not provide iterative tables for manual modification.
- For tube-to-tubesheet joints, the software automates weld strength logic but does not cover all possible joint configurations; verify against UW-20 for complex arrangements.

- Reviewing all nozzle and attachment calculations independently for local stress effects.
- Obtaining proper review and approval from a qualified Registered Professional Engineer (RPE).
